Ryan Goldberg is an independent journalist and the author of Bird City: Adventures in New York’s Urban Wilds, published by Algonquin Books in November 2025. He has written for the New York TimesTexas MonthlyThe InterceptProPublica, Popular ScienceNational GeographicAudubon, Vice, DefectorDeadspin, and the Village Voice, among many other publications.

Goldberg writes about the environment, city life, crime, sports, and much more. His award-winning feature for Texas Monthly, “The Drug Runners,” was the inspiration for “The Infinite Race” (2020), an ESPN 30 for 30 documentary on which he served as a consulting producer. He also worked for HBO’s “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel,” where he won a Sports Emmy for Outstanding Sports Journalism in 2009, and has written for four Olympics broadcasts and a World Cup. In 2012, he won an Eclipse Award for outstanding achievement in horse racing journalism.

Goldberg began his reporting career in 1999, as a junior in high school, at the Asbury Park Press in New Jersey. He lives in Brooklyn, and leads regular outings for the Brooklyn Bird Club.
