Ryan Goldberg is an independent journalist and author who has written for the New York Times, Texas Monthly, the Intercept, ProPublica, Vice, Defector, Deadspin, Popular Science, Audubon, and the Village Voice, among many others. His first book, Bird City: Adventures in New York’s Urban Wilds, will be published by Algonquin in November 2025.

Goldberg writes about the environment, city life, crime, sports, and much more. His award-winning Texas Monthly feature, “The Drug Runners,” was the inspiration for “The Infinite Race” (2020), an ESPN 30 for 30 documentary on which he served as a consulting producer. He has also worked for HBO’s “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel,” where he won a Sports Emmy for Outstanding Sports Journalism in 2009, and written for four Olympics broadcasts and a World Cup. In 2012, he won a Media Eclipse Award for writing about horse racing.

Goldberg began his reporting career in 1999, as a junior in high school, at the Asbury Park Press in New Jersey. He lives in Brooklyn, and leads regular outings for the Brooklyn Bird Club.
